JOHN HANCOCK ANNOUNCES RETURN OF DEFENDING CHAMPIONS TO 2016 BOSTON MARATHON

Lelisa Desisa and Caroline Rotich Set To Defend Titles On April 18

We welcome you to join us to #RunBold over the most historic marathon course in the world on April 18, 2016. Sharing the roads with you will be the 2015 champions Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia and Caroline Rotich of Kenya. Both champions will return to defend their titles as part of the 2016 John Hancock Elite Athlete Team.

Last year, Desisa broke away from the lead pack in the closing mile to secure his second Boston Marathon title.  After his first win in 2013, Desisa gifted his champion`s medal back to the City of Boston to honor the victims and families affected by the April 15 race day tragedy. His sincere gesture earned him a place in the hearts of all who respect what the sport of marathon running exemplifies, and his repeat win has firmly placed him in the record books as the only Ethiopian man to have won the Boston Marathon twice.

"I am so happy to return to Boston in 2016 to try to make history as a three-time champion of the world`s most historic race and to do my best to represent Ethiopian running on the global stage," said Desisa. "Boston has become more than a race to me; the city and its people are special and my wins in Boston are the most important moments in my athletic career. I am dreaming of crossing the finish line first for the third time."

In the women`s race last year, there was another dramatic finish that hundreds of thousands of fans have come to expect at the Boston Marathon. In the final mile, three women pulled away from the lead pack: Rotich, Mare Dibaba and Buzunesh Deba. All brought Boston experience to the race and all were seeking their first Boston title. As Deba faded rounding the historic right on Hereford and left on Boylston, Rotich and Dibaba raced side-by-side down the finish stretch with Rotich prevailing by four seconds for the win.

"For what Boston has given me and what Boston has endured, I would like to give back by defending my title on April 18," said Rotich. "I cannot wait to line up with everyone else and give it 100 percent."

Getting "Battle Ready" by following your training plan

At the first of five 2016 Boston Marathon Training Clinics, participants were advised on how to best prepare for April`s race. Based on an easy-to-follow six step guide, all runners are able to become better overall athletes by focusing on their body and its mechanics.

Among topics discussed at the opening clinic were base training; prehab instead of rehab; how to get and stay healthy; and how to solidify a solid game plan.

TRAINING TIP BY TERRENCE MAHON

How do you beat the winter running blues? The key is not to get blue in the first place - get and stay warm. Running in cold weather is a much more enjoyable experience when you head out the door wearing appropriate clothing for the conditions. Take time now to do an inventory of your cold-weather running wardrobe. Look for what`s missing. Maybe it is a moisture wicking hat, a fleece lined windbreaker, or some thicker running socks. One or two articles of clothing can make the difference between an enjoyable run on a cold winter morning or a frigid slugfest with Mother Nature. Invest in your marathon training by getting those extra layers ready. Your hands and feet will thank you now, and your Marathon fitness will thank you later!
